Interpreting queer stories at Nottingham Castle

24 Jun 2026

Speaker: Emma Fearon

Searching for queer stories within heritage sites is often a challenging task, due to a history of persecution towards the LGBTQI+ community. Queer stories also often face a burden of proof that is difficult to obtain, due to the ephemeral nature of sexuality and sexual desire. Euphemistic language may be utilised to hint towards a queer story, but it often has the effect of obscuring the queerness of the artefact. This presentation will explore several case studies within the Nottingham Castle collection that are suggestive of queer stories and will discuss how we can search for LGBTQI+ stories when visiting museum spaces.
